Labuan Bajo & Komodo Tours

The harbour town where every Komodo story begins: dragons, Padar sunrises, manta rays and a fleet of wooden phinisi waiting at the marina.

Every great sea story in this corner of Indonesia starts in the same small harbour town on the western tip of Flores. Labuan Bajo grew from a Bajo fishing village into the gateway of Komodo National Park without ever quite losing the fishing village part: the seafront still smells of salt and grilled fish, and the sunset over the bay remains the best free show in the country.

The reason you are here lies offshore. Komodo National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage site of dry savannah islands, blue straits and reefs that fire on every cylinder: our sailing trips thread between Padar’s three-bay viewpoint, the pink-sand beaches south of Komodo, ranger-guided dragon walks on Komodo and Rinca, and the manta cleaning stations at Karang Makassar where the rays queue like aircraft on approach.

How trips work here

Everything departs by boat, and the format you choose shapes the trip. Our wooden two-masted phinisi run the signature open trip as a multi-day voyage, which buys you the single most valuable thing in the park: being anchored off Padar at 5 a.m. while the day fleet is still tied up in town. Browse all tour packages or meet the boats that sail them in our phinisi fleet.

When to come

The dry season runs roughly April to November. April–June and September–November are the connoisseur months — calm crossings, empty trails, glassy mornings. July–August brings perfect weather and peak demand; book boats two to three months ahead. The January–February monsoon turns the hills green and the manta numbers up, at the price of occasional rerouting.

Best time to visit Komodo, month by month

Month range Sea conditions Wildlife highlights
December – February West monsoon; rain in bursts, outer crossings can close briefly Manta rays peak at Manta Point; lush green hills
March Seas settle; hills still green Quiet trails; good photography
April – June Calm seas, visibility past 25 m Whale sharks off Sumbawa; active dragons; mantas all year
July – August Flat and reliable (busiest, book ahead) Dragon mating season; cloudless skies
September – November Glassy dawns, visibility holds Highly active dragons; whale sharks into October
Komodo National Park, month by month. Whale shark sightings are in Saleh Bay, Sumbawa, which our open-trip crossings call at on the way.

Getting here

Komodo Airport (LBJ) sits ten minutes from the harbour, with direct flights from Bali (about 70 minutes) and Jakarta daily. Many guests reach the dragons by sea instead: our open-trip phinisi sail the full Lombok–Labuan Bajo crossing via Sumbawa’s whale sharks, Moyo and Satonda — proof that the journey between destinations can be the best part of the map.

Travel Tips & FAQ

  • Fly into Komodo Airport (LBJ) — 70 minutes direct from Bali, 10 minutes from the harbour.
  • Best months: April–June and September–November for calm seas and empty trails.
  • Bring park fees in cash or QRIS (about IDR 400k domestic / 800k international).
  • Pack trail shoes for Padar and a dry bag for boat days.
How do I get to Labuan Bajo?

Fly into Komodo Airport (LBJ), ten minutes from the harbour. There are multiple daily direct flights from Bali (DPS, about 1 hour 10 minutes) and direct flights from Jakarta. There is no need for a ferry - every one of our Komodo trips starts at the Labuan Bajo marina, and we include airport or hotel pick-up.

How many days do I need for Komodo National Park?

A speedboat day trip covers Padar, the dragons, Pink Beach and Manta Point in one long day. To see the park properly, and to stand on Padar at sunrise before the day fleet arrives, sleep on board across a 4-day sailing trip so you wake up inside the islands, well before the day boats.

When is the best season for a Komodo boat trip?

April to June and September to November offer calm seas, dry trails and 20-30 metre visibility. July and August are superb but busiest. January and February bring the west monsoon: trips run with flexible routing, and the hills turn spectacularly green.

Are Komodo National Park fees included in tour prices?

Park entrance and ranger fees are set by the government and paid at the gate (roughly IDR 400k domestic / 800k international, plus small activity levies). Our crew handles the paperwork and queues; you bring the fee in cash or pay by QRIS.

Should I join an open trip or charter a private boat?

Travelling as a couple or solo, our open-trip phinisi share a beautiful boat at a per-person price across the four-day Lombok to Komodo sailing route, from Rp 3,700,000. For groups, families and honeymooners we also arrange private charters on request, with the route and pace shaped around you. Tell us your dates and we will match the right boat.
