This is the scenic way to leave the dragons behind and drift home toward Lombok and Bali. The KLM Walinreng sails the legendary crossing in reverse — Labuan Bajo to Lombok — over four days and four nights, an open-trip voyage built around the three encounters travellers come to Indonesia for: wild Komodo dragons, gliding manta rays and the gentle whale sharks off Sumbawa. Departures run every Sunday from Labuan Bajo, beginning with an airport or hotel pick-up at 17.00 and an evening departure from the harbour at 19.00, so you settle into your cabin, eat dinner on deck and wake already deep inside Komodo waters. If you are sailing the other way, see the reverse Lombok-to-Labuan-Bajo sailing instead.
The second day is the headline reel of a Komodo boat tour, packed into one morning and afternoon: the iconic three-bay sunrise hike on Padar Island, a ranger-guided trek to the wild dragons of Komodo Island, the rose-coloured sand of Pink Beach, and a swim above the rays at Manta Point. Day three slows the pace right down with two quieter, lesser-known shores — the sweeping golden dunes of Savana Beach and the clear, coral-fringed water of Coral Beach — with long, unhurried hours to snorkel and laze on deck as the phinisi cruises west. The grand finale comes on day four off Sumbawa: swimming with the whale sharks, exploring jungle-clad Moyo Island and trekking to the cascading Mata Jitu “Lady Diana” waterfall, before a final night on board and a relaxed disembarkation the next morning between 7 and 8am in Lombok.
Life aboard the KLM Walinreng
The Walinreng is a comfortable wooden phinisi with air-conditioned double-bed cabins, each with its own en-suite bathroom, across five cabin classes so you can travel as a couple, a family or solo on a shared deck. Meals are full board with a relaxed, snack-free flow — mineral water, coffee and tea always on hand — and the boat carries shared fishing gear and a spear gun, snorkeling equipment and free WiFi on board. A free shuttle handles your transfer, and all entrance fees, including the Komodo National Park fees, are organised for you. The crossing departs from Labuan Bajo, the gateway town to Komodo National Park.

Scenic by sea, or quick by air?
Be honest with your calendar. Sailing turns the journey home into the holiday itself, but it commits four days; if your dates are tight, it is faster to fly Labuan Bajo (LBJ) to Lombok (LOP) in about an hour. To weigh sailing against flying and the overland route — and to plan a trip in the other direction — see our guide to the Komodo tour from Lombok, which lays out every way to cross between Lombok and the dragons.
Good to know
This is an open-trip departure that leaves every Sunday from Labuan Bajo aboard the KLM Walinreng, finishing in Lombok the next morning between 7 and 8am. Cabins are air-conditioned with en-suite bathrooms and the schedule belongs to the sea, so the trip suits travellers with flexible days rather than tight onward connections. April–June and September–November bring the calmest crossings. All entrance fees, including the Komodo National Park fees, are included in your cabin price; flights to Labuan Bajo or onward from Lombok, hotels, travel insurance, personal expenses and crew tipping are not included. Cabin prices run from Rp 5,500,000 per person, with all meals on board, snorkeling gear, free WiFi and a local crew included.
