Should I pick the budget open trip or the premium phinisi?
Pick the budget Lombok to Labuan Bajo open trip (from Rp 3,700,000) if value matters most: it covers the same islands, dragons and whale sharks on a larger, more sociable boat with shared bathrooms. Choose the premium KLM Walinreng (from Rp 5,500,000) if you want en-suite cabins, a smaller boat capped at 20 guests and a quieter, more private feel. Same route, different comfort level.
Lombok to Labuan Bajo, or Labuan Bajo to Lombok?
Most travellers sail westbound, Lombok to Labuan Bajo, and either budget (Mon/Wed/Sat) or premium (Thu) departures run that way over 4 days / 3 nights. If you are already in Flores or want to finish your holiday in Lombok or the Gili Islands, take the eastbound Labuan Bajo to Lombok 4D4N open trip, which departs on Sundays and adds an extra night. The islands and wildlife are the same; only the direction and start point change.
Which boat has the best cabins, and which is best for families, couples or solo travellers?
The KLM Walinreng has the best cabins — five en-suite classes including a Family Balcony cabin — making it our pick for couples, honeymooners and families who want privacy. Solo travellers and budget couples are well served by the budget boats: Nur Amira (Mon), Budi Jaya (Wed) and Fajar Fadillah (Sat), which are larger and more sociable with shared bathrooms.
How many days do I need?
Every open trip is four days, so plan for at least four full days plus your travel to and from the start point. The westbound trips (both budget and premium) are 4 days / 3 nights one way. The eastbound Labuan Bajo to Lombok route is 4 days / 4 nights — one extra night on board. Whichever you choose, four days is enough to see the whale sharks, the Komodo dragons, Padar and Pink Beach without rushing.
When is the best time to go?
April to June and September to November are the best months: calm seas, dry trails and the clearest water across all our open trips. July and August are excellent but the busiest, so book two to three months ahead. The December to February rainy season still runs with flexible routing, the islands turn green, and manta-ray sightings actually peak in those wetter months — a fair trade for the odd weather day.
What is included, and what should I budget extra?
Every open trip is all-inclusive of on-board meals, snorkeling gear, the Komodo National Park and whale-shark fees built into the trip, and free transfers from your Lombok hotel or the Gili Islands. The main extra to budget for is the Komodo National Park entrance and ranger fee, paid in cash at the gate (about IDR 300–400k for domestic visitors, 800k international). Drinks beyond water, tips and any flights are also on you.
Can I get a private boat instead?
Yes. Beyond the scheduled open trips we can arrange a private phinisi charter for groups, families and honeymooners — your own cabins, your own pace and a route built around your dates. Because private departures depend on the boat, the number of days and the season, we quote them individually rather than list a fixed price. Request a quote with your group size and travel window and we will draft a real itinerary.
